One of the main key elements to prevent mice and rats from entering your home is “no in and out privileges.” Rodents are masters at finding ways to enter a structure to find shelter in order to nest and hide. In this blog you’ll find 5 things you can do to keep your home rodent free. Step 1. Complete a thorough inspection of your home. A detailed inspection will go a long way to prevent unwanted guests from entering the structure of your house or apartment. Grab a flashlight, phone, or note pad and write down all of the areas you find that could be possible entry points. Start on the outside and inspect the foundation, siding, trim and soffits. Paying special attention to see is any damage or holes going into your home. Also, have a look at the ground. Rats will burrow tunnels underground and can destroy a healthy front yard or enter your home through the basement. Next head inside and have a walk through your home in and check for openings or hole a rodent could fit through, pay special attention if there are pipes coming though the walls as this is a common entry point. After you have inspected all the rooms in the house, head up into the attic. The attic can be a prime nesting ground, pay special attention for any light entering the space. This means it's likely an opening a rodent could fit through. Step 2. Clean up clutter from outside and inside the home. Rats and mice need three things to survive. Water, shelter, and food. Having clutter piled up outside of your home will provide a prime nesting opportunity for rodents, which they would be happy to make their home. If your noticing rodents inside of your home, have a look around making sure you do not have clutter. For example, closets that are jammed packed full of clothes and belongings are what rodent likes in order to hide and nest. Another thing to try and avoid are cardboard boxes on the floors or pilled belongings creating clutter. Always try and keep household items off the floors so you can limit the places rats and mice can hide or nest. Step 3. Garbage habits. All rats and mice love garbage for obvious reasons! I mean everything has to eat! Having a look your garbage patterns is crucial in not attracting rodents. If you keep garbage in your kitchen, make sure and lid is on the can, and it is emptied regularly. Try to avoid storing a full garbage bag outside on a patio or deck, as this will almost guarantee there will be rodents excited to come for a feast. Always make sure garbage goes directly from you house out to the garbage can or bin. If able, keep your garbage bin away from your home, as well as your compost bin. If the bins are close your the structure they will attract more pests. Step 4. Water. Water is essential to the survival of rats and mice. Have a look at your yard and see if there are any drainage issues. Are there puddles or containers with water in them? Also, do you have standing water in your gutters? These are a few questions to keep in mind when to keep your home free of pests. Inside out your home, do you have leaking faucets or standing water in pots and pans? Always make sure there is no water available for rodents which will help to prevent unwanted guests. Step 5. Block entry points. During the inspection, if you find a hole you’ll want to block right away. Doing this will not allow “in and out privileges.” Also, key entry points are your doors and windows. Have a look at your window screens and make sure they are in good shape and not damaged. Exterior doors are common ways a rodent will enter a structure. Try to keep doors closed at all times or use a screen door to block access inside. It is possible to keep your home rodent free and we hope this blog will help you along the way. If you have rodents in your home, we all know how unpleasant it can feel. Following the 5 steps in this blog will get you that much closer to keeping your home pest free for years to come.
